Medicine is finding new ways to help the body heal itself using special cells and natural substances already present in our tissues. These treatments have become more widely available and more affordable. This means patients can now receive standardized regenerative therapies that help their bodies respond to injury, aging, and disease without having to stay overnight in the hospital or travel outside the United States.

Some of the most promising tools include autologous stem cells from your own body and allogeneic (not from you, but too undifferentiated to cause an adverse immune response) umbilical cord blood–derived stem cells, exosomes, secretomes, and Wharton’s Jelly. All of these contain natural, biological growth factors and cytokines.

Growth factors and cytokines have been shown to bind cell receptors and activate molecular pathways involved in Inflammation control (reduces swelling, stiffness, and pain); clearing of cellular debris (reduces scar tissue formation); forming new blood vessels (increases blood flow and oxygen); and enhancing cellular growth and division (healing, cell repair, and regeneration).

“Autologous” stem cells come from your own body, often from bone marrow or fat tissue. Because they come from you, your body readily accepts them without an allergic response. These undifferentiated cells (e.g., not muscle, skin, or nerve cells) carry instructions and blueprints that help your body repair tissues more quickly and accurately, reduce inflammation, and support natural healing—especially for conditions like joint pain, arthritis, muscle injuries, and after elective aesthetic procedures. These cells decline in number as we age, but they can be collected, safely expanded, and banked in an FDA-registered tissue bank. You pay for storage, and your (younger) cells are available anytime you need them. In the USA, we are highly regulated, so you know you are getting back tens of millions of live cells to help your body. (almost like when you were young and had lots of these cells!)

“Allogeneic” umbilical cord blood–derived stem cells come from donated umbilical cords after healthy births. This cord blood is rich in young, healthy cells that provide instructions for your body’s cells to heal and reduce inflammation. These donated cells are carefully screened for infectious diseases, immunizations, and genetic abnormalities in FDA-registered labs that adhere to GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) to ensure they are safe and potent for patient use. Because these cells are so young, they haven’t developed external markers that your body might reject (immune-privileged), so they can be used more safely than older allogeneic tissues that require “crossmatching” or risk graft-versus-host reactions.

In addition to stem cells, scientists have identified tiny extracellular vesicles (exosomes) and factors that stem cells produce and release. These carry information, triggers, and genetic messages that help your body’s healing factories rev up and heal itself, often more quickly and effectively. These signals to and between your cells help guide your body’s repair process, reducing inflammation and encouraging new tissue growth.

Cord blood stem cells and exosomes themselves are not therapeutic agents that treat, heal, repair, or regenerate damaged tissues. Instead, the natural biological growth factors and cytokines carried and delivered by these cells and exosomes are known to enhance the body’s ability to heal, repair, or regenerate damaged tissues.

Another helpful source of healing material is Wharton’s Jelly, a soft, cushion-like substance found inside the umbilical cord. It contains numerous healing and growth factors and specialized cells that can help activate your body’s healing and reduce pain and swelling after injury. This material has been used to temporarily cushion joints and to instruct your body to heal.

These biologic treatments can be provided as part of medical practice in an outpatient setting, including topical treatments, injections, and IV infusions, depending on the condition(s) being treated. Because they use natural materials from the body, they offer a more natural way to help people recover faster, feel better, and improve quality of life—especially for people living with chronic pain or tissue damage.
