ABOUT SCLEROTHERAPY

What is Sclerotherapy? Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical treatment for spider veins. Spider veins can be created by obesity, genetics, hormonal changes, blood clots, as well as prescription drugs, and certain medical conditions. Spider veins are typically small purple, blue, or red irregular veins that can be easily seen underneath the skin,  They branch out on the face and body and usually have a thicker "supply" vein that needs to be treated for improved outcome.   Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Edward M. Zimmerman performs sclerotherapy, laser and light treatments, and ambulatory phlebectomy (surgical removal) to minimize or remove visible spider and varicose veins on the face or body. A nonsurgical injectable procedure with no recovery time needed, sclerotherapy may give you a more even skin tone that you'll want to show off. Make an appointment at Aesthetic Revolution Las Vegas in Nevada to get more information about minimally invasive sclerotherapy, plus other skin treatments.

IDEAL CANDIDATES FOR SCLEROTHERAPY

Sclerotherapy treatments are a good option for men and women who are bothered by small or medium-sized blood vessels that can be seen underneath their skin. Generally, spider veins are most visible on the legs so many individuals avoid swimsuits, shorts, or any other clothes that do not cover their spider veins. Patients getting sclerotherapy must be in good overall health the day of their procedure to prevent a reaction. Patients shouldn't have a history of blood clots or be pregnant.

SCLEROTHERAPY PROCEDURE TECHNIQUE

Sclerotherapy treatments will be performed in a private treatment room within a short time and with no anesthesia. The blood vessels to be addressed will be visualized with special lighting, marked, and then the overlying skin will be cleaned. A fine needle will be introduced into the vessel so the sclerosing solution can be introduced. Sometimes Doppler (sound wave) devices are used during the treatment. After removing the needle, gauze will cover the site of injection to help compress it and treat any bleeding. The procedure is repeated to treat adjacent spider veins.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN SCLEROTHERAPY

To confirm you are a candidate for treatment of your leg veins, doppler studies, and a DPPG study may be required. These can sometimes be done under your insurance elsewhere or may be performed in the office for a modest fee.

Once you are done with your sclerotherapy treatment, you can leave our office, wearing your compression hose, to continue your daily routine. You may have mild swelling, redness, or bruising in the areas treated, but this will usually fade on its own. Compression garments help blood circulation following your procedure for better, faster results. It can take a while for the treatment to show results, but the treated spider veins should get smaller, become a white color, and then disappear or fade. You will be asked to walk at least 20 minutes a day for at least 2 weeks after each treatment to minimize "trapped blood" and potential staining. You may require at least four sessions, at least a month apart, to get your best results, but many people are happy with the improvements after the first session. You will likely get more spider veins in future years which may require additional treatments.

SCLEROTHERAPY FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How much does sclerotherapy cost?
The cost of sclerotherapy will vary based on how many veins are treated, the size of the veins, and other factors. During your consultation, Dr. Z will listen to your concerns and goals before developing your personal sclerotherapy treatment plan. From there, he can estimate costs and review your payment options.

What's the difference between sclerotherapy and laser vein treatments?
Sclerotherapy injects a special solution into the vein to make it shrink and gradually be absorbed by the body. Laser vein treatments are noninvasive. Light energy is delivered through the skin, to the vein so it coagulates and becomes absorbed by the body. Sclerotherapy is usually better for medium to larger spider veins and smaller bulging varicose veins of the legs, while laser and light treatments are better for smaller vessels, typically ones above the waist.

What is injected?
Asclera is a brand of sclerosing solution approved by the FDA to treat spider veins and small varicose veins. Asclera is made with polidocanol (an anesthetic agent). Sodium tetradecyl sulfate (a detergent solution), which is a traditional sclerosing solution made in the US by compounding pharmacies that has a greater incidence of post-injection "staining" and small skin ulcerations. During your consultation, Dr. Z can discuss the benefits of Asclera and other brands of sclerosing solutions along with which may be best for your needs. and have the least risk of staining.

Can I get sclerotherapy on my hands and face?
Sclerotherapy can improve spider veins, vascular blemishes, broken blood vessels anywhere on your body. During your consultation, Dr. Z will assess your areas of concern and decide whether sclerotherapy can be used safely to treat the veins you are concerned about. If he feels that sclerotherapy is not a good or safe option, he will discuss alternatives, like laser and light treatments, tying off a vein, or surgically removing it.

How long should I wear compression stockings after sclerotherapy?
Dr. Z or a member of his staff will talk to you about how long you should wear compression garments after sclerotherapy. The compression garment is designed to help your blood circulate but compress the treated veins while they are absorbed by your body and minimize bruising. Ideally, you should continue to wear some level of compression garment after your recovery anytime you are seated for a long time, such as long car rides or on airplanes to help prevent new spider veins from forming.
